I and love and you…The Avett Brothers
Valentine’s Day is right around the corner (just in the nick of time, if you ask me), so it’s the perfect time to plan a romantic getaway with a favorite special someone.
Many parents find separating from their kids difficult, even for just one night (or they worry about a teenager rager straight from a John Hughes movie). But time and again someone (usually someone with a degree from a fancy college) proves (through a dubiously funded study by Hallmark Greeting Cards) that time away “together” is good for parents AND the family. (Couples strengthen the relationship and kids become more secure and autonomous.).
If you have kids and go away without them, you will: miss them, worry, feel bad/guilty, possibly take heat from various relations.
You will also: recharge, reconnect, relax, unwind, have fun, and come home ready to parent the heck out of those kids.
If you don’t have kids, what are you waiting for??
So this Valentine’s Day forget the stale box of chocolate from the supermarket, or the wilted rose from the Kwik-E-Mart. Plan a quick getaway within a few hours from home and steal away from the everyday world. Spend some time remembering why you took this crazy carnival ride together in the first place.
In honor of Valentine’s Day and hopeless romantics everywhere, here are some of the best places around the world to share a kiss.
Bridge of Sighs, Venice, Italy
Kiss your sweetheart on a gondola at sunset while gliding under the Bridge of Sighs, and you’ll find everlasting love. Ironic, because the bridge was named for something much less romantic. A walkway over the canal to a prison, convicts took one last glimpse of freedom through the bridge’s windows and sighed…
Hôtel de Ville, Paris, France
Paris’s City Hall is also the site of Robert Doisneau’s iconic photographic, The Kiss on the Sidewalk. Grab a photographer and recreate the photo with your honey.
Juliet’s Balcony (Casa di Giulietta), Verona, Italy
Yes, I know it’s a tourist trap with no real connection to Romeo & Juliet or Shakespeare. But, who cares. Share a kiss below the balcony with a little hope and prayer for star-crossed lovers everywhere.
The Eiffel Tower, Paris, France
Event the coldest hearts warm in the City of Light. Paris alone is enough to inspire love and romance, add the Eiffel Tower and watch hearts soar. Visit the third level (at night if possible) and share a (French) kiss overlooking Paris. Je t’aime!
Empire State Building, New York, New York
Ever since the film A Night to Remember was released in 1957, lovers have met to share a kiss on top of the Empire State Building. Avoid the crowds and visit at night (the observation deck is open until 2:00 am) and channel your best Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. (Too mid-20th century? How about Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks and Sleepless in Seattle?)
Rick’s Bar, Casablanca, Morocco
Another fictional place brought to life, Rick’s Bar in Casablanca recreates the 1940s world of Rick (Humphrey Bogart) and Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman), complete with a piano player and memorabilia from the film and its stars. Touristy? Maybe. But come on, it’s Casablanca!
Lover’s Point, State Marine Reserve, Pacific Cove, California
A beautiful spot on the Pacific Ocean and one of the only spots on the west coast to watch a sunrise over the water. The point faces east, making it a favorite spot for newlyweds and hopeless romantics.
Makena Beach State Park, Maui, Hawaii
Enjoy a beautiful sunset with your sweetheart on the soft, golden sands of Makena Beach State Park. Profess your love by the light of crystal-clear water glowing gold and red as the sun continues its journey around the earth.
Cliffs of Moher
In a country full of romantic spots, the Cliffs of Moher stand out. Arrive early in the morning to watch the sun rise over an endless Atlantic Ocean and Aran Islands
